Today we're talking to Sam Selim, the author of BEST HOW TO SELL BOOK, THINK THE THINK

 

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I LIVE IN THE NORTH CAROLINA COUNTRYSIDE, I ALSO SPENT SOME EARLY CHILDHOOD YEARS IN LONDON ENGLAND, I HAVE A NICE QUIET COTTAGE/CABIN IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS ALSO, WHERE I GO TO THINK, AND SOAK UP ALL THE WONDER THAT SURROUNDS ME. I WENT TO NC STATE UNIVERSITY, AND I HAVE BEEN IN CORPORATE AND BUSINESS SALES SINCE GRADUATING.


How and when did you become a writer?

WELL, I ONCE HAD AN EARLY BUSINESS MENTOR TELL ME TO ALWAYS KEEP A BUSINESS ONLY JOURNAL… I STARTED DOING THAT DAY ONE, AND I ALWAYS WROTE MY THOUGHTS BEFORE AND AFTER A BUSINESS MEETING. I JOTTED DOWN IDEAS, WAYS TO HELP THE CUSTOMER, THOUGHTS ON WHAT I DID RIGHT AND WHAT I DID WRONG ALSO… I HAD THAT JOURNAL WITH ME IN BUSY AIRPORTS AND RED EYE FLIGHTS ACROSS COUNTRY. PRETTY SOON, IT BECAME A “MUST DO” FOR ME… 28 YEARS LATER, I FOUND THAT I KEPT ALL THE JOURNALS, SIDE BY SIDE ON MANY SHELVES IN MY OFFICE… I WOULD FIND MYSELF OPENING DIFFERENT ONES AND READING AN IMPORTANT NOTE. KIND OF LIKE WHAT NOT TO DO AND WHAT TO DO ADVICE FROM MY PAST SELF… I ALSO FOUND THAT THERE WAS SOME VERY COMMON THREADS TO THE MAJOR WINS IN MY CAREER… THE BOOK WAS A MOMENTUS RESULT OF ALL THESE THREADS COMING TOGETHER – A REALIZATION OF SORTS, A EUREKA MOMENT FOR ME. EVERYTHING BECAME CLEARER AND CLEARER WITH TIME AND DISCIPLINE… THE BOOK BECAME THE NATURAL NEXT STEP – THE EFFECT OF ALL THAT CAUSED ME TO LEARN. IT WAS IN HAWAII, A FEW YEARS AGO – WHERE I RENTED A CONVERTAIBLE AND DROVE AROUND TO DIFFERENT BEACHES, SLEPT IN THE CAR WITH THE TOP DOWN, AND WATCHED SUNSETS AND SUNRISES, THAT I REALIZED – I NEED TO PUT IT ALL IN A BOOK.

 

What genre do you write?

THIS BOOK WAS THE RESULT OF MY PROFESSIONAL REALITY. THE EMPIRICIAL SUM OF ALL MY JOURNAL NOTES… IT IS A NON-FICTION BOOK.


How would you describe your writing style?

I LIKE TO THINK THAT MY WRITING STYLE IS VERY PLAIN AND CLEAR. I LOVE FIRESIDE CHATS, THE SMELL OF THE WOOD BURNING AND THE SETTING OF A DISARMING AND CASUAL DISCUSSION, AROUND THE GLOW OF EMBERS, IN A NIGHT SKY, ACROSS A STAR FIELD PASTURE, OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A MOUNTAIN FOREST. JUST PLAIN, STRAIGHT UP TALK, WITH ALL ITS PAUSES, NUANCES AND GENUINESS.


What makes you different from other writers?

I BELIEVE THE BEST WAY TO ANSWER THAT IS TO JUST SAY, THAT MY STYLE ISNT FOR EVERYONE – BUT WHAT I SAY, IS WHAT EVERYONE IN MY FIELD NEEDS TO HEAR. I AM DIFFERENT, IN THAT I DON’T LOOK FOR DIFFERENT WAYS TO SAY THE SAME THING EVERYONE ELSE SAYS, OR WANTS TO HEAR. THE REALITY IS, TOO MANY FAKE SUITS, PASS EACHOTHER IN BUSINESS LOBBIES AND AIRPORT TERMINALS – JUST LOOKING TO WIN A DEAL, TO MAKE SOME MONEY. MY WRITING, AND MY BOOK, A DIRECT RESULTS OF DECADES DOING WHAT I WRITE ABOUT. I WAS MY BIGGEST CRITIQUE, AND DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING I LIKED AND DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT WHAT I DID – AND CONSCIOUSLY FOUND WAYS TO IMPROVE – IN SUCH A WAY, THAT IT CAME TOGETHER IN A VERY CLEAR AND SYSTEMATIC PROCESS. ALSO, I EXPOSE TRUE THE TRUE AGENDA, AND MAKE PEOPLE EVALUATE EVERYTHING IN THE SELLING PROCESS – WITH THE HOPE THAT PEOPLE REALIZE, THAT THERE IS A CLEAR AND NATURAL PATH TO IMPARTING VALUE, AND GAINING A WIN-WIN IN EVERY BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP.


Who inspires you?

REAL PEOPLE INSPIRE ME. OTHER THAN MY MOM AND DAD, I DON’T HAVE A HERO. HOWEVER, THEY TAUGHT ME THAT ANYONE THAT GIVES ME A REAL HANDSHAKE, LOOKS ME IN THE EYES, AND STANDS BY THEIR WORD – IS SOMEONE WHO SHOULD INSPIRE ME… AND THAT CAN BE ANYBODY!

 

What are you most proud of?

WELL, I DON’T WALK ON WATER – BUT I DON’T WALK ON PEOPLE EITHER…
I AM JUST HAPPY I AM ABLE TO BE A GREAT DAD TO MY DAUGHTER.


How did you come up with the title of your book?

THE TITLE, IS REALLY IN THE SUBTITLE, THINK THE THINK. THE REASON BEHIND THE TITLE, IS THAT FOR TOO LONG, CORPORATE WORLD HAS BEEN MISGUIDING SALES PEOPLE AND BUSINESS PEOPLE ALIKE, BY SHORT SIGHTED CLICHES AND GIMMICKS – LIKE, “FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT”, “WALK THE WALK” AND “TALK THE TALK”… MY BOOK SAYS HOGWASH TO ALL THAT, AND PROPOSES THAT WE “THINK THE THINK” INSTEAD. YOU SEE, THAT IS WHAT IS MISSING. WE NEED TO GET BACK TO THE “HUMAN PROTOCOL”, THE AGE OLD SYSTEMS THAT EARLY MAN HAD EMBRACED FOR SO LONG – SYSTEMS THAT WORK TOGETHER, AND AN AWARENESS THAT EVERYTHING WE THINK, SAY AND DO, EFFECTS EVERYTHING ELSE, NOT JUST IN BUSINESS, BUT IN LIFE.

 

What are you working on now?

ACTUALLY, I AM ALWAYS KEEPING A BUSINESS JOURNAL, AND THAT MAY LEAD TO ANOTHER BOOK ONE DAY. HOWEVER, I AM NOW FOCUSING ON THE B.R.A.S.S. SELLING SERIES, COACHING AND TRAINING, THAT IS BASED ON THE SYSTEMS AND PRINCIPLES WITHIN MY BOOK. BRASS STANDS FOR BRAVO RAIN ACCELERATION SELLING SYSTEM. ITS REALLY GOING WELL AND TAKING OFF, SO MY TIME IS GETTING RATHER BOOKED UP.

YES, FOR THOSE IN A SALES TYPE CAREER – BE PROUD, IT IS A PROFESSION THAT CAN EFFECT SO MUCH AROUND YOU – INCLUDING YOURSELF… FOR THOSE THAT ARE IN ANY OTHER CAREER – BE PROUD, BECAUSE YOU USE INHERENT SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES EVERY DAY THAT YOU MAY NOT REALIZE – IF YOU BECOME AWARE OF THEM, AND YOU FIGURE OUT HOW TO FINE TUNE, TWEAK, ADJUST VARIOUS ASPECTS… THEN YOU ARE AN INCH AWAY FROM THE GOAL LINE… AND YOU CAN TAKE MANY WITH YOU.
